With an unending list of hits and cross-continental collaborations with international hitmakers such as Nicki Minaj, Summer Walker, Chris Brown, Nas, Lil Baby, Sauti Sol, Focalistic, Uhuru, and most recently, Kanye West’s Sunday Service Choir, his decade-long career has seen him go from an emerging pop star to a global icon.
The 17-track album, published in 2012, is now regarded as one of the seminal works that paved the way for modern African music and inspired a new generation of young African musicians that are taking over the globe today.
The album title in Yoruba means “the kid of a wealthy parent,” alluding to his father’s wealth. Davido, now one of Africa’s top earners in music, has moved out of his father’s shadow and fashioned his own tale, amassing his own fortune and a global fan base.
Davido is more than a musician; he is a tastemaker who has propelled a number of emerging African singers to mainstream prominence by either delivering free verses or co-signing them through his independent label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW).
