During this year’s Star Wars Celebration, new details regarding The Acolyte, a planned Disney Plus Star Wars series set during the final days of the High Republic Era, were scarce. The shocks, it appears, were saved for the week of the San Diego Comic-Con.

Amandla Stenberg of The Hate U Give stated in an Instagram photo linked to San Diego Comic-Con that she has joined the cast of The Acolyte in a cryptic role that may have something to do with the Dark Side based on her Darth Maul shirt.

While Lucasfilm has been cautious not to divulge too much about The Acolyte — a thriller about the development of individuals strong in the dark side of the Force — showrunner Leslye Headland has stated that The Phantom Menace had a big influence in her becoming a fan of the franchise.

“I was genuinely extremely curious as to why George Lucas had begun us at that specific time,” Headland told The Wrap last year. “I was curious, but what occurred to lead up to this?” That’s when my ‘Star Wars’ fan brain wondered, ‘How did we get here?’ And why are the Jedi thus way?”

With so many episodes about Star Wars heroes, it stands to reason that the future of Disney Plus would include a series portraying the exploits of one of the saga’s many villains who have played crucial roles in molding its history. Given how fans have responded in the past when Star Wars attempted to go down that road, The Acolyte is bound to elicit strong reactions.

There is presently no information on when The Acolyte will premiere.
