Bungie is currently an official part of Sony.

The acquisition is now complete.

Bungie, the Destiny 2 developer, has officially joined Sony. The PlayStation manufacturer declared its intention to purchase the game company in January, and the transaction is now finalized. Sony first stated (pdf) that the acquisition was worth $3.6 billion, but in an SEC statement on Friday, it stated that the deal was worth “about” $3.7 billion.

Despite being acquired by Sony, Bungie will “continue to independently publish and artistically create our games,” according to Bungie CEO Pete Parsons in a blog post from the original announcement of the purchase. Future games in development, according to Bungie’s Joe Blackburn and Justin Truman, will not be PlayStation exclusives.

However, Sony intends to rely on Bungie for its “world-class experience in multi-platform development and live gaming services,” which “will help us deliver on our objective of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of players,” according to Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan. Sony sees live service games as an important element of PlayStation’s future, and it expects to release more than ten new live service games by March 2026.

With Bungie being officially part of Sony and Take-Two completing its acquisition of Zynga in May, we now have to wait for Microsoft to complete its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. However, that may take some time; Microsoft anticipates the purchase to finalize sometime during its fiscal year 2023, which began this month and goes through June 2023.

Correction Tuesday, July 16th, 2:00 p.m. ET: Although Sony first stated that the transaction was valued $3.6 billion, it later stated in an SEC filing on Friday that it was worth “about” $3.7 billion.
