Canalys reports that North American smartphone shipments increased by 4% in the first quarter of 2022, with Apple leading the market.

According to a report by market research firm Canalys, the North American smartphone market saw a small 4 percent increase in shipments in the first quarter of 2022. In this case, Apple became the primary driver, increasing its market share by 19% to 51 percent in Q1 2022, while Samsung took second place. Motorola finished third in this category, while TCL and Google finished fourth and fifth, respectively, during the quarter.

According to Canalys, North American smartphone shipments reached 39 million units in the first quarter of 2022, representing a 3.7 percent year-on-year (YoY) increase.

According to the report, Apple was the largest contributor to smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2022, with 19.9 million shipments helping it achieve a market share of 51 percent. Samsung shipped 10.5 million units, placing second with a 27 percent market share. The South Korean brand increased by only 1% year on year.

Motorola ranked third in North America in terms of smartphone shipments. The company shipped 4 million products and experienced 56 percent annual growth while holding a 10% market share.

TCL and Google, on the other hand, took the fourth and fifth spots in the North American smartphone shipments market in Q1 2022, with 4 percent and 3 percent market share, respectively.

“High inflation puts enormous pressure on carriers in North America because rate increases will be required,” said Canalys Analyst Brian Lynch. “Heavy discounts and high trade-in values are being used to attract and retain customers for the region’s largest telcos, relieving pressure on the high-end smartphone market.” Supply will continue to be a major bottleneck for the top vendors in the coming quarter, but North America will remain a priority and should maintain healthy supply levels. Despite its uncertain economic outlook, the North American market is well positioned to avoid significant volatility in shipments,” Lynch added.

According to the report, the high performance of the iPhone 13 is considered the driving force behind Apple’s strong shipment growth in the North American smartphone segment in Q1 2022.
