Protests against zoning at the PDP and APC headquarters
Over ten thousand demonstrators seized over the national offices of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday over claimed intentions by both political parties to zone their presidential tickets to the North.
Speaking on behalf of the demonstrators yesterday in Abuja, the convener of Concerned Nigerian Citizens for Power Shift to the South, Femi Osabinu, warned the leadership of both parties that southern Nigeria must be allowed to be President in 2023.
Any option other than a southern presidency, according to Osabinu, may destabilize the nation.
Osabinu stated that the rotation of power in Nigeria goes beyond the aspirations of political parties, explaining that an arrangement is also a tool for ensuring national unity and stability, insisting that candidates from southern Nigeria must be allowed to occupy the position of President in the country come for the sake of equity.
“We are deeply concerned as loyal citizens of Nigerians that barely a few days before your party’s Presidential primaries, the party has failed to notify Nigerians of its conclusion regarding where it is zoning the Presidential ticket.”
“Recall that the rotation of power in Nigeria is more than just a tool for political parties; it is also a weapon for guaranteeing national unity and stability, and in this light, candidates from southern Nigeria must be permitted to run for President of the country in 2023.”
“We would also want to remind you that the established protocol is that authority must spin between the North and the South. As a result, a President of Northern descent follows a President of Southern descent and vice versa. Any thought other than this is improper and may destabilize the polity.
“It is only fair that authority should be transferred to the south after President Muhammadu Buhari.” Any argument to the contrary is against our country’s unity and stability.
“It is equitable that if the above is established and power is granted to the south, we will not only be obeying this established convention of power rotation, but we will also be contributing to the critical need to bring stability and national cohesion back into our democracy.”
“It is the Southern part of the country’s time to create the next President of the country, and we trust that your party will have no trouble issuing a final statement on this extremely important topic in the coming days.” This must be completed as soon as possible.
“The notion of federal character is incorporated in the 1999 Amendments to the Constitution.” Remember, there would be no APC if there is no Nigeria. Let us prioritize Nigeria in our resolutions.
“While we wish you the best as we approach the general election, we would want to reiterate that nothing short of a rotation of power to the South will be acceptable to us and our people.”
