Nigerians demand tangible action on insecurity, not compassion

‘Nigerians demand tangible action on insecurity, not compassion,’ says one expert. Afenifere informs Buhari.

Afenifere, the biggest Yoruba socio-political party, challenged President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday to wake up to his responsibilities of defending Nigerians from terrorists and other criminals in the country.

In a statement, the group’s publicity secretary, Jare Ajayi, voiced skepticism that Buhari was aware of the security concerns in various parts of the country.

In several sections of the country, security difficulties have been created by robbers, armed herdsmen, and Boko Haram extremists.

Afenifere was dissatisfied with Buhari’s lack of leadership in the face of mounting security concerns.

“Unfortunately, we have not seen any indicators that the C-in-C is aware of the gravity of the crisis or is putting up any strategy to arrest it,” the statement said.

“It would be recalled that within two weeks, there were about three kidnappings in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, leading to the death of some victims, the beheading of five people in the South-East, the abduction of people in Katsina, Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Niger, the killing and abduction of about 15 people, including Indian expatriates, in Kogi State, and the abduction of some chiefs in Akoko

“These are in addition to several other such heinous actions that have been occurring with increasing severity in various sections of the country.”

“What Nigerians expect from the government is action, not pity – acts that would put a stop to the horrific, indeed life-ending events they are currently experiencing.”

“Equally crucial, President Muhammadu Buhari must come out and tell terrorists and kidnappers that he has had enough.”

“He should let them understand that the agreement he signed with Nigerians was not to come and attend to the serial termination of their lives, but to assure their security, improve their welfare, and advance the country to a more desirable next level.”

Unfortunately, the president has failed to deliver on any of the desired outcomes. He simply brought the nation negatives that were much beyond anyone’s expectations.”
