Against the background of the country’s security difficulties, Shehu Sani, a former member of the National Assembly and civil rights campaigner, has advised Nigerians to stop praying for the nation’s leadership and instead pray for themselves.

Sani stated in his Sallah address Friday, marking the conclusion of Muslim fasting, that authorities who have enabled repeated terrorist attacks and deaths of civilians without resolving the issues do not deserve Nigerians’ prayers.

“It is past time for regular Nigerians to stop praying for their leaders and start praying for themselves,” he stated. The poor have been praying for the mighty and wealthy while remaining outside in the cold.

“It is unacceptable for any Nigerian in positions of power and authority to cheerfully celebrate Sallah when our people have been in the bush, in the hands of terrorists, since the Abuja-Kaduna train attack over 33 days ago.”
“Most Nigerian politicians continually invoke and utilize the name of Allah for political and economic objectives, but Allah is not in their hearts and deeds,” he continued.

“The political season of 2023 has arrived.” No one should be duped by religious merchants who abuse our people’s values and faiths for political gain.”

Rev. Dr. Samson Ayokunle, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), wrote to all church leaders in the association’s five blocks, urging them to pray for Nigeria on May 13, 14, and 15, 2022.
Daramola Joseph Bade, General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), said in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja that the church must pray to God to show compassion for Nigeria and intervene divinely in its economics, politics, and security to prevent the country from collapsing.

“The church needs to pray that God would speak to our leaders, that they would take the right steps in addressing the dangerous situations we have put ourselves in, and that God would continue to be with the electoral umpire, that they would stand firm without an iota of partiality in ensuring that elections are free and fair,” he said.

Supplicants will also ask that “God condemn anybody openly who, out of selfishness, plans to create instability in the next elections, no matter how highly placed; that the voters come out and vote the right people into power.”

“That God would give the military the upper hand in subduing terrorists and other violent people wreaking havoc in our country; that He would divinely fight for Nigeria against these evil people and their financiers; and that our generation would witness a new Nigeria marked by equity, justice, and peace, regardless of ethnic group, religion, or political affiliation.”
Meanwhile, Muslims have been instructed to prepare their voter registration cards for the general elections in 2023.

“MURIC reminds Nigerian Muslims of their civic responsibility of participating in all aspects of political activities in the country, particularly as we prepare for the 2023 general elections,” said Muhammad Mansur Aliyu, group chairman of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Sokoto State branch, in his Sallah message.

We emphasize the need for every Muslim to obtain a voter card in order to be eligible to vote. There is no amount of hardship that is too great for this crucial civic obligation.”

“Muslims must not avoid politics if they are to be emancipated from the current wave of stigmatization, marginalization, and destitution,” he continued. We warn that Muslims who do not receive voter registration cards have voted for wicked rulers and Muslim haters whose primary goal is to harass and abuse Muslims.”
