A Metropolitan Police officer who appeared on Big Brother without authorization received a final written warning.

PC Khafilat Kareem requested unpaid leave to feature in the Nigerian version of the reality program in June 2019, but was told it was “not in either her or the Metropolitan Police Service’s best interests to participate.”

Despite this, she appeared on the show in July 2019 and turned over her work laptop to the event’s organizers, which she had carried with her without authorization.

A misconduct tribunal determined that PC Kareem, who was assigned to the force’s transformation directorate, had violated professional behavior standards in the areas of “orders and instructions” and “discreditable conduct.”

The panel, chaired by an independent legally-qualified chair, determined that the officer’s breach of professional standards in relation to the laptop amounted to gross misconduct and that the officer should receive a final written warning.

“Permission was refused for PC Kareem to participate on the Nigerian version of Big Brother as it was judged it was not in the best interests of either her or the Metropolitan Police Service to take part,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Andy Day of the Met Police’s Transformation Directorate.

“Despite her objection, she appeared on the show.”

“The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards conducted a thorough investigation and determined that PC Kareem should face gross misconduct proceedings.”

“Being a police officer entails adhering to professional behavior standards. PC Kareem’s behavior plainly fell well short of expectations, and she has been issued a final written warning.”

The panel determined that the laptop-related violation of professional standards amounted to misconduct.

During her time on the program, the policeman fell in love with another participant Gedoni Ekpata, who subsequently became her fiance.

Audiences were captivated by their liaisons, with the couple apparently having sex on the television, while colleagues worried she was ruining the name of the Metropolitan Police.

Following the Sun revelation, she turned to Instagram to blast the article while also pleading for votes.

She asked people to support ‘TEAMKHAFI,’ and tweeted a link to vote, as well as a statement from the show’s management, in which she was described as a “proud black female police officer,” and warned that legal action was being contemplated.

The cop, who has spoken out against stop-and-frisk, joined the force after the death of a 16-year-old acquaintance.

The PC worked as an airport spotter, looking for potential victims of female genital mutilation (FGM).

She also served as a translator, as she is fluent in French, Italian, and Yoruba.

Miss Kareem was shown in uniform promotional materials for the concert, presenting her as a skilled singer and dancer.

‘Police officer Khafi Kareem thinks that you can have everything if you trust in yourself,’ the ad claimed of Miss Kareem.

‘She is aiming not only to win the prize money but also to gain the visibility that being in Big Brother Naija House would provide so that she may do social good.’

Nigerian news websites uploaded videos of the pair appeared to be in a congressional session beneath the blankets.

‘There are now worries that Khafi will leave Big Brother Naija House pregnant as she and lovebird Gedoni continue their hot affair,’ according to one report. The cameras captured them for the third time overnight, when the rest of the roommates were fast sleeping.

‘The now-trending video showed the lovebirds wriggling their bodies in pleasure beneath the blankets.

‘Gedoni and Khafi romped in the home for the first time on Saturday, July 20, and then again on Tuesday, July 23.’

Her colleagues were underwhelmed by her involvement. According to another Met insider, ‘there should be no way back for her from this, and her superiors will have to act.’

‘She fit the mold perfectly for how the contemporary force wants to be perceived, but she seemed to have grown a little too large for her boots.’

‘It’s difficult to see how she can claim she hasn’t brought the police into discredit.’

‘The Met does not condone the officer’s appearance, nor does she represent the Met when participating on the show,’ a Met spokeswoman said at the time.

‘Whether on or off duty, all officers have a duty to act professionally and in a way that does not bring the Met into discredit.’

‘Those who do not behave properly risk violating police norms of professional behavior and may face disciplinary procedures.’
